Peebles Burgher Church congregation was first established in 1789 when a group of inhabitants of Peebles, and the surrounding area, petitioned the Burgher Presbytery of Edinburgh requesting that they be provided with sermon. Supply service was provided from the 1st December 1789 and the session was later constituted by the ordination of three elders in 1793. Thomas Leckie, the first minister of the congregation, was ordained in 1794 and a new church was opened many years thereafter in 1877. In 1900, upon the union of the United Presbyterians and the Free Church, Peebles United Presbyterian was renamed Peebles Leckie Memorial United Free Church and the session was moved from the United Presbyterian Presbytery of Edinburgh to the United Free Church Presbytery of Galashiels. Following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Peebles Leckie Memorial United Free became Peebles Leckie Memorial Church of Scotland and in 1976 a union was established with the congregation of Peebles St Andrew's, to form the session of Peebles St Andrew's Leckie.
