The congregation of Ormiston Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Dalkeith, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when the minister and congregation of the Parish Church of Ormiston adhered to the Free Church. A church was opened in the following year to house the congregation. In 1861 the minister of Pathhead Free Church retired and the charge was reduced to a station. Five years later in 1866 however the minister of Ormiston also retired and as a result the two congregations were united under one minister. A number of years thereafter in 1873 a vacancy occurred within the united session and in 1874 both congregations were reduced to stations, until the following year when Ormiston was sanctioned and Pathhead was entirely suppressed. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Ormiston Free Church became Ormiston United Free and following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Ormiston United Free was renamed Ormiston St John's. In 1936 Ormiston St John's joined with the congregation of Ormiston St Giles, under the name of Ormiston Church of Scotland. After this local union the former St John's church and manse were sold. |
