In 1842 two ministers from Dundee began religious service within Newtyle, which were held at various temporary locations until 1844 when a church was built and opened. At the disruption of 1843 the congregation adhered to the Free Church however it wasn't until 1862 that Newtyle Free Church was sanctioned as a separate charge. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Newtyle Free Church became Newtyle United Free and following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Newtyle United Free was renamed Newtyle East Church of Scotland. A number of years thereafter in 1938 Newtyle East joined with the congregation of Newtyle West, under the name of Newtyle. After the local union the former East Church was converted for use as the church hall. Newtyle Kirk Session sat within the Presbytery of Meigle. |
