The congregation of Newtyle Associate, which sat within the Presbytery of Dundee, was established in 1834 in response to a request for provision of sermon within the expanding village. A church was erected in the following year and initially the congregation was organised as a mission station, until 1838 when the first minister, John Muir, was ordained. In 1874, upon the death of John Muir, it was decided that, due to declining numbers within the congregation and the increase in popularity of the Free Church within Newtyle, there should be no replacement minister appointed. In response to a request from the remaining members of the congregation of Newtyle United Associate, a student preacher was provided for a numbers of years however there was no permanent revival of the charge and on the 1st February 1880 the church was closed as a place of worship. |
