The congregation of New Deer United Presbyterian Church, which was known for many years as Artamford, originated in 1805 when the Burgher Presbytery of Perth was petition by a number of residents of New Deer requesting that they be provided with sermon. The request was granted and on the first Tuesday in May of the following year they were constituted into a congregation. A church was built soon after and the first minister of the charge was ordained in 1809. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, New Deer United Presbyterian was renamed New Deer East and in 1908 a union was established with the congregation of New Deer West. After the local union the East Church ceased to be used and in 1910 a further union took place between New Deer and a home mission station that had opened up at Maud. Following this union the congregation, which sat within the Presbytery of Deer, became known as New Deer and Maud. |
