The church at Newcastleton originated as a Burgher congregation which was originally named Liddlesdale. This charge had an uncertain start, but eventually settled under their first minister, James Fletcher in 1762. However, there were some questions raised about Mr Fletcher's suitability as minister due to doctrinal differences , and eventually he left the charge, leaving a very small congregation behind him. In 1804 the name was changed to Newcastleton, a new church was built and under the new minister the congregation grew considerably. The congregation at Newcastleton passed successively to the United Presbyterian Church in 1847, and the United Free Church in 1900, in the latter case as Newcastleton South United Free Church. In 1929 the United Free Church passed back to the Established Church and the congregation became Newcastleton South Church of Scotland. A union with Newcastleton Park took place on the 30 December 1934, the united charge taking the name of Newcastleton Church of Scotland. However, by 1940 the charge was reduced in status and a few years later on 29 December 1946 a further union occurred with the congregation of Castleton Church of Scotland, keeping the name Castleton. |
