During the year 1850 a number of Free Church residents of Castleton formed themselves into a congregation and petitioned the Presbytery of Jedburgh, requesting that they be formally recognised as an official charge. The presbytery consented and Newcastleton Free Church was sanctioned, a church to house the congregation was later erected in 1853. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Newcastleton Free Church became Newcastleton North United Free Church and following the 1929 union of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Newcastleton North, United Free was renamed Newcastleton Park Church of Scotland. Newcastleton Park, which sat within the Presbytery of Hawick, was later united in 1934 with the congregation of Newcastleton South under the name of Newcastleton, but and the charge was reduced in status in 1940. A further union took place with Castleton in 1946. |
