The United Presbyterian Presbytery of Paisley and Greenock began mission services within Millport on the 22nd June 1862, and in the following year a temporary wooden church was opened with accommodation for 350 people. Supply service continued until 1864 when a congregation was formally organised and the first minister of the charge, Joseph Leckie, was ordained on the 20th December of that year. In 1879 a new church was erected. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Millport United Presbyterian Church was renamed Millport West United Free Church and, following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Millport West United Free Church became Millport West Church of Scotland. In 1971 Millport West was joined with the congregation of Millport East, under the name of Cumbrae. |
