During the mid 18th century Craigmailen was the centre for those on the Antiburgher side of the Secession church in West Lothian, and beyond to the east, west and south, in 1760 however, following the death of Andrew Clarkson the first minister of Craigmailen, a branch of Antiburghers residing to the south-east decided that this provided a sufficient opening for them to establish a separate Antiburgher congregation. The place of worship they decided upon was Midcalder and the first supply of service was provided within Midcalder on the 1st June 1761. The first church of the congregation was erected a number of years thereafter in 1765 and the first minister, William McGeorge, was ordained in 1766. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Midcalder United Presbyterian became Midcalder United Free Church and the charge was removed from the United Presbyterian Presbytery of Edinburgh to the United Free Presbytery of Bathgate. Following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland Midcalder United Free was renamed Midcalder Bridgend Church of Scotland and the charge was suppressed in 1952. |
