The congregation of Maryton Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Brechin, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when the minister and a number of the congregation of Maryton Parish Church adhered to the Free Church. Worship initially took place within a barn until a church was erected at the head of the Den of Fullarton, the position of this place of worship however was deemed inconvenient as it was practically inaccessible from the low ground, consequently a new site was secured in 1855 upon which a new church and manse were erected. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Maryton Free Church became Maryton united Free Church. The charge of Maryton United Free was reduced in status in 1922 and the congregation was dissolved a number of years thereafter in 1927. |
