The congregation of Leith St John's was established at the Disruption of 1843, when the minister and the congregation of St John's quoad sacra parish adhered to the Free Church. They remained within the church of St John's until 1868 when the building was withdrawn from their possession by the Presbytery of Edinburgh, and as a consequence a new church was erected in Charlotte Street to house St John's Free. In 1900, upon the union of the United Presbyterians and the Free Church, Leith St John's Free Church became Leith St John's United Free and a number of years thereafter, St John's United Free was joined with the congregation of Elder Memorial. In 1929, following the union of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Leith St John's was renamed Leith St John's West Church of Scotland and a further union took place between the congregations of St John's West and St John's East in 1954, under the name of Leith St John's. Leith St John's was later transported to the church extension parish of Oxgangs, under the name of St John's Oxgangs. |
