The congregation of Kirkurd Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Biggar and Peebles, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when the minister of the parish church of Kirkurd and a number of his congregation adhered to the Free Church. Worship took place for a time in the old mansion house of Scotston until a new church was erected on a site granted by Sir Thomas Gibson Carmichael, Bart, of Castle Craig. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Kirkurd Free Church became Kirkurd United Free and following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Kirkurd United Free was renamed Blythbridge Church of Scotland. The charge was reduced in status during the preceding year and in 1935 the congregation of Blythbridge was united with that of Kirkurd Parish Church. |
