The beginnings of the congregation of Inveraray Secession Church can be traced back to February 1830 when it is recorded that the Presbytery of Glasgow was petitioned by a number of persons resident within Inveraray with a request that the Secession Church provide them with the sermon. A mission preacher was appointed from this time and in 1835 the station was placed under the charge of Regent Place Church. A new church was opened in 1836 to house the congregation of Inveraray Secession Church, provided largely by funding from Regent Place, and the minister of the session, James Hay, was ordained in 1838. In 1898, upon the resignation of the third minister, William Stirling, it was agreed that no further supply should be appointed, in the hope that the members would join the Free Church charge of Inveraray, and the congregation was accordingly dissolved. Inveraray Secession Church sat within the United Presbyterian Presbytery of Greenock. |
