A Presbyterian congregation existed in Gibraltar as early as 1823, and in 1841 William Strauchan was sent by the Church of Scotland to minister to the soldiers and Scottish residents in Gibraltar. The Church of Scotland Colonial Committee allowed Strauchan a grant and the congregation of St Andrew's was formed. The congregation then passed to the Free Church in June 1843, although the charge was sometimes termed 'Presbyterian connected to the Free Church of Scotland'. Strauchan was ordained there the following year, before leaving to become a missionary at Constantinople. Thereafter a succession of Free Church ministers were sent out to Gibraltar, but in 1854 Rev Andrew Sutherland was settled as a permanent minister and a church was opened in May 1854. The charge passed to the United Free Church in 1900 under the ministry of Ian Brown Smith, and then back to the Established Church in 1929. The congregation shared ministry with the charge of Costa del Sol from 1978, and the two charges were linked in 1996, but the linkage was severed in 2002. The congregation was dissolved in December 2022. |
