In 1867 Rev Robert Stewart, formerly minister at Tarland Free Church, was sent out by the Free Church to Lisbon, Portugal to form a Presbyterian congregation for the British and a mission for the Portuguese. The congregation initially worshipped in hired rooms, until in 1872, an old convent and church was purchased, known as the Mariannos Church. The building was in need of some repair, and the considerable sums required were raised by people both in Lisbon and Britain. The additional rooms within the old convent building enabled the setting up of a day mission school for local children. With extensive fund raising much was accomplished in Lisbon, and the congregation moved to new premises in Rua da Arriaga in 1899. The following year, in 1900, the congregation passed to the United Free Church and subsequently to the Church of Scotland in 1929, and in the latter case the name of the charge was known more commonly as Lisbon, St Andrew's Church of Scotland. |
