Tarbat Free Church began at the Disruption of 1843 when the minister and almost of his congregation 'came out'. Being a large congregation, they were able to build a church and manse by 1845, and a new church was built later in 1893. Some years later, however, failure of the fishing industry in the area, was partly responsible for a considerable decrease in the population. Membership declined from 900 to less than 150 by the time the congregation passed to the United Free Church in 1900. The church, manse and school were all allocated to the Free Church at this time, but in 1909 a new church and manse were built. Gaelic services were also discontinued in 1909 and hymns were introduced to the worship the following year, with instrumental music being introduced in 1921. When the United Free Church passed back to the Established Church, Tarbat United Free became Tarbat East Church of Scotland. A union took place in 1946 with the congregation of Tarbat West Church of Scotland, the united charge simply taking the name Tarbat Church of Scotland. |
