The minister of Shieldaig, and most of his congregation 'came out' in 1843 and ahdered to the Free Church. It wasn't until 1864 that Shieldaig was officially recognised as a Disruption charge, and much later, in 1872 that a minister was appointed. The church building and manse were erected in 1877. The congregation was named Shieldaig and Torridon Free Church, but Torridon was severed from Sheildaig in 1890, only to reunite in 1894. The charge passed to the United Free Church in 1900, although a section of the congregation remained with the Free Church. In 1916 the congregation united with that of Kinlochewe as Shieldaig Torridon and Kinlochewe United Free Church, and later in 1929, when the congregation passed back to the Established Church, Shieldaig was dropped from the name, and it became Torridon and Kinlochewe Church of Scotland. |
