The first minister of Nelson Street United Presbyterian Church, Thomas Brown, had originally worked in a Free Church mission in Gallowgate for a number of years, where the congregation thrived under his ministry; increasing their membership from 91 to 211 in the nine years that Mr Brown was there. However, the congregation became dissatisfied with the Free Church due to their refusal to give the charge full status, and therefore they, and others connected in some way to the Mission, laid a memorial before the Presbytery of Aberdeen to be received into the United Presbyterian Church. The petition was granted and on the 3rd May 1864 Mr Brown was ordained. In due course it was decided that another place of worship was required and a new church in Nelson Street was built and opened for worship in March 1867. When the United Presbyterian Church united with the Free Church in 1900, the congregation became Aberdeen Nelson Street United Free Church, and united with Aberdeen St Andrew's United Free in 1909 to form Aberdeen King Street United Free Church. |
