On the 15 June 1767 a petition from 37 persons in the parish of Loudoun was laid before the Antiburgher Presbytery of Glasgow, requesting supply of sermon. This was agreed to by the Presbytery, but intially services were held at Darvel rather than Newmilns; and then only once a month. In 1773 the first Antiburgher church was built at Newmilns with 400 sittings and the first minister, James Greig, was ordained there on 30 November 1773. The Antiburgher church was a member of a section of the Secession Church, and when in 1847 the Secession and Relief churches united, the charge at Newmilns became Newmilns United Presbyterian Church. As a result of the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterian Church in 1900, the congregation became Newmilns United Free Church; and subsequently passed to the Established Church as Newmilns West Church of Scotland. The congregation was dissolved on 8 November 1961. |
