In 1845 the Loudoun and Newmilns section of Galston congregation was disjoined, thereby forming a separate charge under the name of Loudoun Free Church. The following year, a new church for this new congregation was built and the charge was sanctioned. The congregation dwindled in the early 1880s as many members left the district due to the decline of handloom weaving, but in later years the introduction of steam-powered mills brought in more work to the area and thus the population grew, and along with it, the church membership increased. The congregation passed to the United Free Church in 1900 as Loudoun United Free Church. In 1929 the United Free Church passed back into the Established Church, and the congregation at Loudoun became Newmilns Loudon East Church of Scotland. A union took place on 30 September 1980 between the churches of Newmilns Loudoun East and Newmilns Loudoun Old to form Newmilns Loudoun Church of Scotland.
It seems that the spelling of Loudoun/Loudon is interchangeable. |
