The Original United Presbyterian congregation worshipped at Riccarton where their first minister, Rev Daniel McNaught was inducted on 18 March 1802. McNaught left Riccarton to accept a call to Biggar in 1808. The congregation struggled for a while after McNaught's departure, but on the 25 July 1811 Rev James Kirkwood was ordained as minister, and the congregation flourished. It was during Rev Kirkwood's ministry that the congregation removed to Kilmarnock in 1815 where a new church was built. By the time of the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church in 1900, the membership at King Street was around 820 in number, when it became Kilmarnock King Street United Free Church. When the United Free Church passed back to the Established Church in 1929, the congregation became Kilmarnock King Street Church of Scotland. There followed a union with the congregation of Kilmarnock Portland Road in 1965, the united charge being known as Kilmarnock Howard Church of Scotland. |
