The population of Troon began to increase around 1808, due toTroon's emerging importance as a seaport on the coast of Ayrshire. By 1814 the population growth was such that the people of Troon presented a petition to the Burgher Presbytery of Kilmarnock for sermon, which was granted immediately. Services were initially held in a flat above a rope works, but in 1822 the building of a permanent church got underway. The following year a session was organised with the ordination of three elders, . but money problems followed and due to the collapse of the congregations members were encouraged to join other congregations. In 1839 a petition was raised for a renewel of sermon, and the following year the foundations were laid anew and Rev David Forrest was ordained as minister in December of 1840. The United Presbyterian Church united with the Free Church in 1900 to form the United Free Church, and the congregation at Troon took the name Troon St Meddan's United Free Church. The charge passed back to the Established Church in 1929 under the name of Troon St Meddan's Church of Scotland. |
