Banchory-Devenick Free Church congregation was founded at the Disruption of 1843. Much preparation had been made in advance and so the church was erected and opened by November 1843, with the manse being built the following year. The congregation was around 400 strong in 1844, but diminished somewhat as other churches were opened in the area. At the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterian Church in 1900 the congregation passed to the United Free Church as Banchory-Devenick United Free and supported a Mission Station at Cove Bay. The United Free Church united with the Established Church in 1929, and at this time the congregation became Banchory-Devenick, St Devenick's on the Hill Church of Scotland. A union with Banchory Devenick Old took place on 6 October 1935, and the charge became Banchory Devenick Church of Scotland. A link was formed with Maryculter in 1972, which continued even after the union of Maryculter and Cookney sessions in 1982. The Banchory Devenick session sat within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Aberdeen and later of Kincardine and Deeside. |
