Woodlands Road congregation began in 1840 as an offshoot of Duke Street United Presbyterian Church in Glasgow. There were two ministers at Woodlands Road, Dr Muter and Rev H M MacGill, who worked jointly in the church. After a period of three and a half years, however, there seemed to be some unrest within the church, and the congregation took a vote to amend the duties and stipends of the two ministers. The Rev MacGill was so unsettled by these disturbances that he resigned as minister. Upon this news, 186 members of the congregation petitioned the Presbytery to be disjoined from Duke Street and formed into a new congregation with an additional request that Rev MacGill be their minister. The Presbytery eventually agreed to grant the petition, and the new congregation was formed, worshipping initially in the Mechanics' Hall in Hanover Street, Glasgow. After this new congregation had been in existence for a year a new church in Montrose Street was opened with 1000 sittings. |
