The history of this congregation began in 1843 at the time of the Disruption, when several families in the parish of Saddell and Skipness formed a small Free Church congregation. A minister was appointed to preach at Skipness and Kilberry in 1844, but only after Kilberry was sanctioned in 1863, did separate services begin at both Carradale and Skipness. Initially these services were held in various places in the area, including schoolrooms and barns, until a church and manse was built at Carradale in 1887; and a church in Skipness in 1892. Although Carradale and Skipness were two distinct congregations, they were sanctioned as a double charge in 1890. Unfortunately, the congregations dwindled somewhat as a result of the diminishing fishing industry. The charge passed to the United Free Church in 1900 as Carradale and Skipness United Free Church, using the church building at Carradale. The Established Church united with the United Free Church in 1929, and a few years after this union, in 1936, the Skipness portion of Carradale and Skipness United Free united with Skipness Church of Scotland. At the same time the Carradale portion of Carradale and Skipness United Free united with Saddell, but this union was dissolved soon afterwards, only to be renewed in 1952 to form Saddell and Carradale Church of Scotland. |
