Dr Matthew Barclay, minister of the parish, 'came out' at the Disruption of 1843, and the Free Church of Old Kilpatrick was built in 1844. Sometime later a Manse, school buildings and stables were also built, but the school and stables were later converted into dwelling houses and church halls. The congregation of Old Kilpatrick were very active in the local area and were the initiative behind the setting up of a Free Church in the village of Bowling and the Hamilton Memorial Church in Clydebank. Dr Barclay was a philanthropic character, paying for the manse at Clydebank at his own expense and leaving it to the congregation in his will. Also leaving a sum of money for support of the Free Church school. The congregation at Old Kilpatrick passed to the United Free church in 1900 under the name of Old Kilpatrick Barclay United Free and subsequently joined the Established Church in 1929 as Old Kilpatrick Barclay Church of Scotland. During the Second World War, in 1941, the Church Hall was destroyed by enemy action, but the congregation continued and in 1990 the churches of Dalmuir Overton and Old Kilpatrick Barclay united to form Dalmuir Barclay Church of Scotland. |
