The congregation was formed at the Disruption of 1843 by those who adhered to the Free Church in the parishes of St. Andrews, Lhanbryde and Urquhart. Initially there was nowhere for the congregation to worship, so they held their services in a barn at Meft, until the Earl of Fife's Trustees offered them the use of the old parish church after a new one was erected. However, the congregation subsequently moved back to the barn for a short while, then purchased a wooden building in the village before a new church was finally erected in 1844. The charge then passed to the United Free Church at the uniting of the Free Church and the United Presbyterian Church in 1900. When, in 1929, the United Free Church united with the Established Church of Scotland, the congregation became Urquhart St. Margarets Church of Scotland, within the Presbytery of Elgin. |
