At the time of the Distruption of 1843 Elgin High was the only church in Elgin. Almost all of the congregation 'came out' in 1843 and the church then became known as Elgin Free Church. However, the church could not accommodate the large number of worshippers, so a second charge was formed in 1851 under the name of Elgin South Free Church. In 1900 the charge passed to the United Free Church and in 1929 to the Established Church. In 1938 Elgin South and Elgin Moss Street united to form Elgin South (United) Church of Scotland. |
