Dumfries South Free Church was formed in 1860-61, as a result of a mission from St George's Free Church. The church was built and opened in 1865, and the charge sanctioned in 1866. In November 1900, when the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church united to form the United Free Church, South Free Church became South United Free Church. In 1929, when the United Free Church united with the Church of Scotland, South United Free Church became known as Dumfries South Church of Scotland. Dumfries South Church of Scotland united with Townhead Church of Scotland in September 1951, under the name of Dumfries South and Townhead Church of Scotland and using the South Church building. The Townhead church building and the South Church manse were sold. Dumfries South and Townhead Church united with Dumfries St Michael's on 2 October 1983, under the name of Dumfries St Michael's and South Church of Scotland. |
