In October 1787 sermon was appointed to Dumfries for the first time by the Relief Presbytery of Glasgow, meeting initially in the Cameronian's meeting room. In 1788 a church was built with accommodation for 800 people. The congregation had hoped to call Mr Kirkwood, who had set up the mission station at Dumfries, as its first minister, but he was reluctant to leave his charge at Strathaven. Mr John Lawson was inducted to Dumfries in March 1790. In June 1847, the Relief Church nationally merged with the United Secession Church to form the United Presbyterian Church. Thus, this Relief congregation in Dumfries became Townhead United Presbyterian Church, (referred to as the 2nd United Presbyterian Church). In November 1900, when the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church united to form the United Free Church, Townhead United Presbyterian Church became Townhead United Free Church. In 1929, when the United Free Church united with the Church of Scotland, Townhead United Free Church became known as Townhead Church of Scotland. Townhead Church of Scotland united with Dumfries South Church of Scotland in September 1951, under the name of Dumfries South and Townhead Church of Scotland and using the South Church building. The Townhead church building and the South Church manse were sold. Dumfries South and Townhead Church united with Dumfries St Michael's on 2 October 1983, under the name of Dumfries St Michael's and South Church of Scotland. |
