The Minister of the Parish, Rev Matthew Kirkland came out at the Disruption of 1843, with the majority of his congregation following him. The Free Church at New Cumnock was built in 1843 with the school and teacher's house being built the following year. In 1900 at the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterian Church, the New Cumnock congregation passed to the United Free Church. Arrangements for the building of a new church began in 1913 with money bequeathed by Mr William Arthur, and in recognition of Mr Arthur's generosity the church was renamed New Cumnock Arthur Memorial United Free Church. This congregation united with Afton United Free Church in 1923, and the united charge then passed back to the Established Church in 1929 as New Cumnock Arthur Memorial Church of Scotland. |
