Denholm Free congregation was formed in 1843 when adherents to the Free Church from Minto, Bedrule and Cavers 'came out' at the Disruption. Deholm was situated in Cavers, and this new charge took the name Denholm Free Church. The congregation's first minister was settled in 1844, and a church was built the following year. A manse was built in 1849 and the Pitt Memorial Hall in 1893. The congregation decreased in number considerably, however, as the majority of the local people were quarrymen and stocking weavers, and when the quarries closed, the weavers disappeared and the population decreased as a result. The congregation survived, however, and passed to the United Free Church in 1900, and improvements to the church were made in 1901. The United Free Church passed back to the Established Church in 1929, and the congregation became Denholm Church of Scotland. A linkage took place with Bedrule in 1963, and a further link with Minto in 1976. The congregations of Denholm, Bedrule and Minto united in 2003 to form Ruberslaw Church of Scotland in the Presbytery of Jedburgh. |
