St James's Church, Underwood Road, Paisley has its foundations in an Independent congregation which, in 1823, petitioned the Secession Presbytery of Glasgow for 'sermon, to prepare the way for a more intimate connection'. It was erected into a congregation of the United Secession Church in July 1824. The original Church had been built in 1820, with sittings for 1200. The present building in Underwood Road, was opened in March 1884, with sittings for 1100. The congregation became known as Paisley, St James' United Presbyterian Church in 1847 when the Secession and Relief churches united. It then passed to the United Free Church in 1900, and to the Established Church in 1929 as Paisley, St James's Church of Scotland. The congregation was dissolved in 2016. |
