A petition was made to the Presbytery of Glasgow for a church fellowship to be erected in the district of Strathbungo in 1857. The United Presbyterian congregation was formed in 1858 and worship was conducted in a schoolroom in Crossmyloof, until a church was built and opened in 1859 in Langside Road, Glasgow. The congregation eventually began to suffer financially, but sufficient funds were raised to begin the building of a new church, which opened on 21 May 1897. A few years later, in 1900, the United Presbyterian Church united with the Free Church to form the United Free Church, and the charge at Langside followed suit as Langside Avenue United Free Church. The United Free Church passed back to the Established Church in 1929, and thereby the congregation was re-named Langside Avenue Church of Scotland. A union took place in 1963 with the congregation of Shawlands Old, the united charge keeping the name Shawlands Old Church of Scotland. Shawlands Old in turn united with Shawlands Cross in 1998 to form Shawlands Church of Scotland. |
