Thurso Associate Congregation Church began with an application for supply of sermon to the Antiburgher seceders in 1773. A church was built in 1777 and the first minister ordained in the same year. In 1852 the minister and some of the congregation adhered to the Free Church (as Thurso West), leading to a protracted dispute about the property. The remaining party, now United Original Seceders, were successful and the Free Church had to erect a new building in 1860. It passed successively to the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland. The Church of Scotland charge is in the presbytery of Caithness and was in the synod of Ross, Sutherland and Caithness until the abolition of synods in 1993. |
