Greenock Associate Session Church was originally part of the Secession, one of syndicate of congregations known as the Correspondence of Kilmacolm. The request for a church was first made to the Associate Presbytery in 1738, but it was not until 1752 that the first minister, Daniel Cook, was ordained. The congregation adhered to the Church of Scotland in 1839, being known as Cartsburn Church of Scotland. The charge passed to the Free Church at the Disruption of 1843, becoming Cartsdyke Free, but after a new church was erected at Well Park in 1853, it became known by that name. In 1900 when the Free Church united with the United Presbyterian Church to from the United Free Church, the congregation became Greenock Wellpark United Free Church. The charged passed back to the Established church in 1929 taking the name Greenock Wellpart Church of Scotland, which was in the presbytery of Greenock and the synod of Clydesdale. The congregation was linked with Greenock Mount Pleasant in 1957 and dissolved in 1979. |
