At the time of the Disruption in 1843 a Free Church mission station was established at Fortingall, under the charge of the minister of Kenmore. A church was built soon after and in 1858 the congregation of Fortingall Free Church experienced a considerable increase in numbers due to a secession from the Established Church. Additionally during 1858 a probationer was appointed, regular service commenced, and consequently the charge was sanctioned in 1860. A new church was erected in 1864. In 1900, upon the union of the United Presbyterians and the Free Church, Fortingall Free Church became Fortingall United Free and in 1929, following the union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Fortingall United Free was renamed Fortingall East Church of Scotland. Fortingall East was joined a number of years thereafter in 1940 with the congregation of Fortingall West, to form the united session of Fortingall. The kirk session of Fortingall Free, United Free and Church of Scotland sat under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Breadalbane and later of Dunkeld. |
