Howgate (Antiburgher) Associate Session Church originated in the place of that name, then a hamlet south of Penicuik, around 1750, as part of a general movement in the area on the Antiburgher side of the controversy over the burgess oath. The first minister was ordained in 1754. The congregation passed successively to the United Presbyterian in 1848; the United Free Church in 1900, and to the Church of Scotland in 1929. A link with the congregation of Penicuik South was established in 1979, and in 2019 the link was severed in favour of a union to form Penicuik: South and Howgate Church of Scotland. The session sat in the presbytery of Lothian (formerly Dalkeith) and was in the synod of Lothian and Tweeddale until the abolition of synods in 1993. |
