Haddington, St John's Church was a quoad sacra parish in the burgh, whose minister and most of the congregation adhered to the Free Church. The Free Church adherents in the town worshipped in St John's Church until 1849, when it was claimed by the Church of Scotland. A separate, formerly Original Secession church, which had joined the Free Church in 1852, and as such had been known as Haddington Knox's, dissolved in 1872 and its members joined Haddington St John's. A new church was built in 1890. It passed successively to the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, and united with Haddington West under that name in 1932. The Church of Scotland charge was in the presbytery of Haddington and Dunbar and the synod of Lothian and Tweeddale. |
