St George?s Road Church, Glasgow, originated with Burnbank United Presbyterian Church, which established itself in Cowcaddens in the early 1850s. A church was built in New City Road (opened 1858), but soon proved unsatisfactory. In 1871 the congregation split over a decision to remove elsewhere. The minority who wished to remain in the area purchased a site in St George?s Road near North Woodside Road, where they built a new church (dedicated 1876). This was Garscube Road United Presbyterian (later St George?s Road United Presbyterian, later United Free). It terminated in 1956 on uniting with Lyon Street as St George?s Road (II). As a Church of Scotland charge it was in the presbytery of Glasgow and the synod of Clydesdale. |
