Fenwick Burgher Church owed its immediate origins to a patronage dispute in the parish, although there had been adherents of the Secession in the parish since the 1730s. The dispute lead to a petition to Glasgow Burgher Presbytery in 1782 and the ordination of the first minister in 1787. The congregation passed successively to the United Presbyterian and United Free Churches, in the latter case as Fenwick Orr Memorial, which united with Fenwick Guthrie as Fenwick United Free in 1913. This passed to the Church of Scotland as Fenwick West, which united with Fenwick Old as Fenwick in 1932. The Church of Scotland charge is in the presbytery of Irvine and Kilmarnock and was in the synod of Ayr until the abolition of synods in 1993. |
