Dowanhill Church, Glasgow, originated from the requirements of Partick for better church provision than that provided by its parish church of Govan on the opposite bank of the Clyde. Differences between the supporters of the Relief and Secession churches caused delays, but in 1824 a new Secession church was dedicated, near the intersection of Byres Road and Dumbarton Road, later to become Partick East United Presbyterian Church. In 1866 the congregation moved north to a site off Highburgh Road and changed its name to Partick Dowanhill United Presbyterian (later United Free). It joined the Church of Scotland under the union of 1929. After termination the building was restored (c1989) by the Four Acres Charitable Trust and is currently an arts venue. As a Church of Scotland charge it was in the presbytery of Glasgow and the synod of Clydesdale. |
