The congregation of Fairlie Free Church was established in 1843, at the time of the Disruption, when Dr John Gemmel, minister of the quoad sacra church at Fairlie, along with the majority of his congregation, adhered to the Free Church. They did not retain possession of their church and had to worship for a time in the school, which had been built by, and at the expense of, two members of the newly established Free Church. Owing to problems with the lease on the school building however the congregation was stopped from using this venue as their meeting place and service continued within a stable at Fairlie Lodge until 1844 when the church was opened. The first Fairlie Free Church was later burned down in 1876 and rebuilt during the following year. In 1900, at the union of the United Presbyterians and the Free Church, Fairlie Free Church was renamed Fairlie St Margaret's United Free and following the 1929 union of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Fairlie St Margaret's United Free became Fairlie St Margaret's Church of Scotland. Fairlie St Margaret's later united in 1968 with the congregation of Fairlie St Paul's, to form the Church of Scotland charge of Fairlie. Throughout its existence Fairlie has fallen under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Ardrossan. |
