Free Church service commenced within Ellsridgehill immediately following the Disruption of 1843, and a regular charge was sanctioned here in 1845. The old Ellsridgehill Antiburgher meeting-house was purchased and served as the place of worship for Ellsridgehill Free Church until a new church was erected and opened in 1872. In 1900, upon the union of the United Presbyterians and the Free Church, Ellsridgehill United Presbyterian became Ellsridgehill United Free Church and following the 1929 union of the Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Ellsridgehill United Free was renamed Elsrickle Church of Scotland. The charge was reduced in status in 1930 and in 1961 a link was established with the congregation of Biggar Gillespie Moat Park. Elsrickle Kirk Session, which sat within the Presbytery of Biggar and Peebles and also of Lanark, was later united in 1976 with the congregations of Dunsyre, Dolphinton and Walston, under the name of Black Mount. |
