Wellington (I) Church, Glasgow, originated in 1792 as an overflow from an Antiburgher congregation in Duke Street. A group of members of that church moved west to Cheapside Streeet, Anderston, and then to Wellington Street, near Waterloo Street (1827). The congregation now became Wellington United Presbyterian Church and retained that name after 1884, when it moved to University Avenue, opposite the main University building. It terminated in 1974 on uniting with Woodlands as Wellington (II), which continues to worship in the same church. As a Church of Scotland charge it was in the presbytery of Glasgow and the synod of Clydesdale. |
