Penpont West Free Church originated with a Reformed Presbyterian congregation, which was known locally as Scaurbridge, and formed part of a larger congregation based on Newton-Stewart. In 1796 Penpont was established with its own minister. It adhered to the 1876 union with the Free Church as Penpont West, and then to the United Free Church. It united with Burnhead as Scaurbridge and Burnhead in 1911, and transferred with that name to the Church of Scotland in 1929. The Church of Scotland charge, which united with Penpont in 1942, was in the presbytery and synod of Dumfries. |
