The congregation of Edinburgh Tolbooth was established in 1843, at the time of the Disruption, when the minister of Tolbooth Parish Church and a number of his congregation adhered to the Free Church. Tolbooth Free initially worshipped in the Freemason's Hall in Niddry Street however, the Original Secession Church in Infirmary Street was soon purchased, and the congregation remained in occupation here until their new church was erected in St Andrew's Square in 1858. A number of years thereafter in 1891 Tolbooth Free Church was united with the congregation of St Luke's, under the name of Queen Street Free Church, and following this event the St Andrew's Square church was sold. In 1900, at the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Queen Street Free Church became Queen Street United Free and following the 1929 union of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland Queen Street United Free became Queen Street Church of Scotland. In 1947 Queen Street Church of Scotland was united with the congregation of St Andrew's, under the name of St Andrew's. After 1947 the St Andrew's Church on George Street continued in use as the place of worship and the former Queen Street church was converted for use as a church hall. |
