Edinburgh, Newington Free Church originated at the Disruption, when the minister of Liberton adhered to the Free Church and formed a congregation with members from Newington, whose minister remained in the established church. A new building in South Clerk Street opened in the same year. It passed to the United Free Church and united with McCrie-Roxburgh United Free in 1920. This became Newington East Church of Scotland, which united with St Paul's in 1942 as St Paul's Newington. The Church of Scotland charge was in the presbytery of Edinburgh and the synod of Lothian and Tweeddale. |
