The Edinburgh Secession Student's Missionary Society was established in 1844 in connection with Edinburgh University. The society was set up in order to satisfy a need, felt amongst students belonging to the United Seccession Church, to be able to meet with like minded individuals and to be provided with the opportunity to forge closer relationships with fellow United Secession Church followers. Edinburgh University had a long established Missionary Association which at the Disruption of 1843 was divided into two portions one of which was appropriated by the students belonging to the Churchof Scotland and the other by those of the Free Church. This division provided a favourable opportunity for those of the Secession Church to also set up their own organisation |
