Thurso West Church originated with an application to the Antiburgher Seceders for supply of sermon in 1777. The first minister was ordained in the same year. The congregation refused to enter the union with the Burghers in 1820 and eventually formed part of the Original Secession Synod. In 1852 they split over adherence to the Free Church, leading to a legal dispute over the church property, in which the opponents of union were successful. The Free Church congregation built a new church in 1860 and passed successively to the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland. The Church of Scotland charge is in the presbytery of Caithness and was in the synod of Ross, Sutherland and Caithness until the abolition of synods in 1993. |
